Why would someone work/ behave in prison?

In prison you are probably at the worst condition possible already. If you are not considering parole (like those who are sentenced life in prison or having a sentence so long like that Madoff guy). Why would you still sweat yourself? In theory the prison guards cannot beat you or torture you even if you misbehaved, right?
