Ladies please help as soon as possible!!What to do for extremely painful cramps?

I just started my first period since starting the birth control pill and im having worse cramps than ive ever had!Is this normal and what to do to relieve the cramps?Ive taken pain reliever and im laying on a heating pad. Anything else that helps?
