How do you not switch Pokemon after being KO'd in brawl?

Normally when you get KO'd you switch from squirtle to ivysaur to charizard to squirtle. etc. I've seen videos of people that stay one pokemon the entire game even after dying how do I stay as just one character without pressing Down+B just to get the one I want.
