What kind of animal was this? I saw an animal the other night at midnight in upstate new york, in the forest.?

My friend and I were driving. It was midnight, and we were on a back road in upstate new york, near candor and jenksville. We screamed in horror and almost crashed when we saw this terrifying animal look us in the eyes as we drove by. It looked to be about 3 feet tall and had large eyes, deep black fur, and thick legs, and a flat almost human like face. It was certainly not a dog, and looked too thin to be a bear. It was the most horrifying thing I have ever seen. Can someone help me find info on this? or maybe know what it is? I heard something about some similar animal in Machusetts, but I can't find anything about it. HELP!!!!
