Is it more dangerous for my kids to run around the neighborhood than when I was a kid?

Is it just media hype? I rarely ever hear of some kid being abducted by a stranger locally. I feel like we are depriving our children the freedom to roam their neighborhoods, engage in sports and play to find their individual talents and identity; while perhaps getting some exercise to boot.
