Is being a Phlebotomist in California a good job?

I was laid off in June and due to an error on my part I did not register on time for my cles at the local junior college. I am a nursing major at the JC and after a little looking around I started getting interested in taking a Phlebotomy cl. I know that the pay scale isn't astronomical but I will need these skills when I will be an RN. I am a little indecisive because the next program coming up is in October and costs $3000. Is this a worthwhile endeavor or would I just be wasting my time?
